H.R. 45 Blair Holt Gun Bill

Posted in Politics by wandren on 30 June 2009

In regards to this bill, Snopes  (http://www.snopes.com/politics/guns/blairholt.asp) reports that the bill will not require applicants/owners to “submit to a physical & mental evaluation at any time,” though they would have to authorize the release of current mental and physical health records, and the right to “inspect any place in which firearms or firearm products are stored or held for distribution”  applies to places of commerce, not private residences.

Proponents of the bill, according to Snopes say it would establish a system for registering and tracking gun ownership, similar to the system used for automobiles.

I think this just sounds like another inconvenience for law-abiding citizens and a huge expense for the government.   How will this bill prevent criminals from attaining weapons, and what makes them think people with criminal intent will register their weapons?  Maybe they’re hoping for greater consciousness in crimes of passion (i.e. legal owners will think twice before reaching for their guns) and that owners will be more careful about securing their weapons so they can’t be stolen.
